Sweating it out this summer

What's worse than a mandated 2 hour power load shedding in the middle of a sweltering summer afternoon?
An increase in the power bill rates. Of course the TNEB is in the red, so I guess this was a long ways coming.
Which means our family's pockets bleed even more if we use air conditioning even sparingly. So far I've taken the necessary steps to keep the meter from ticking away too quickly:

  • I've started using CFLs around the house, taking care not to install them for reading purposes.
  • The computer now has Granola installed that reduces the energy utilized by the CPU and the monitor is set to switch off after 5 minutes of inactivity and the computer is set to sleep after 20 minutes of inactivity.
  • Switching off lights and fans even when leaving the room for a short period.
  • Using the air conditioner for just under 2 hours at night and then using a standing fan to cool off.
  • Open up the doors and windows in the morning and read in the sunlight.

Does anyone else have any tips for braving the summer whilst keeping an eye on the electricity bill?
